tortkin

Once upon their time.

A whole new world of stories, with your little one right at the centre.

You read every word before a picture is drawnOnly you can see your booksReady to print at home or with a printer

How a book is made

Three steps, and you decide at each one.

1 · Tell us about them

A few quick questions

What’s the book about?
Starting school, and scaredA new babyWill not brush their teeth
Their age, something only they do, what they look like.

Their age sets how long it is and how many words sit on a page.

2 · Choose the story

Three stories to pick from

LuluGixTwo Bobbles

Then read the one you pick, word for word, and change any line before a picture is drawn.

3 · The pictures

Drawn to match, page by page

Maya, Mum, Miss Patel and Lulu the worry cloud, as designed for the book

Every page in one style, with your child drawn the same way throughout. Redraw any page you don’t love.

What comes out the other end

Lulu, a book made with tortkin for Maya, aged four, on her first day at school.

A page from Lulu

A real picture book of 8 to 22 pages, with a cover, the words lettered onto every picture, and a page at the back for the grown-up with things to talk about.

Read it on any phone or tablet tonight, or send the print version to a printer.

Why it feels like theirs

Their nameOn the cover, and all the way through.
Their worldThe thing they always say, the toy they never put down.
Their lookDrawn once as a character, then the same on every page.
Their EnglishWritten the way your family speaks, wherever you are.

Questions parents ask

Who can see my child’s book?Only you. Each book belongs to the account that made it.
Can I change things?Yes: the story before anything is drawn, and any page’s words or picture after.
How long does it take? The words take a couple of minutes. The pictures take a little longer, and carry on if you close the tab.
Can I delete it?Any book, or your whole account, whenever you like. It’s gone for good.

Your characters

Your characters

The people who come back in your books. Each keeps their look, so they are the same in every story.

In a book drawn in another art style, they are drawn again from their look, as part of that book. Nothing extra to pay. Photos are used only to draw them, then deleted.

Add someone

Tell us who they are and how they look. They are drawn the first time they are in a book, and look the same from then on.

Who are they?

How it works

They are drawn once, then kept.

  1. Saved now, they are drawn with the next book they are in, as part of that book.
  2. Or draw them now to see them first, for 5 credits.
  3. From then on every book uses the same drawing, so they always look like themselves.

You can change how they look at any time. Books already made stay as they are.
